Chapter Thirteen
Maybe it should have seemed weird, but Sabin felt comfortable at Emmett’s folks’ home. Even though it was enormous, there was still love filling it up. He liked that a lot. He’d got to meet Leeann, and she’d been very kind to him. Then he and Emmett had spent the day relaxing, watching movies and cuddling on the sofa downstairs.
Before they settled in for the night, he’d wanted to check in with Nischal again. After doing so, Sabin tucked his cell phone into his shirt pocket. He came in off the small balcony outside of their bedroom. Emmett looked up at him and lowered the volume on the TV.
“Nischal said they won’t stop the patrols completely, but they are going to change things up. He’s going with a few of the others to do some deep scouting around the property, up in the mountains and such, to check for traces of anyone having been there spying on them. Oscar is taking Marybeth with him to scout out the town and look for anyone new hanging around.”
“Sounds like they have it under control,” Emmett said, pleased with the way Sabin’s family was taking the situation so seriously.
“They’re good people. I’m lucky—Nischal and I are both lucky, I mean, to have found family here. We could have been alone, except for Preston.”
Emmett tucked his hand in Sabin’s. “And Paul, which would have led you to Justice, who’s related to Marybeth and all the crew you met anyway.”
“The Fates,” Sabin murmured. “They were going to have their way regardless.”
Emmett shrugged. “Or something. I’m not sure about all the ‘Fates’. I guess the shifter part of me agrees that they do exist, because I can feel a sort of joy and reverence when we talk about them, but as for the human part, my mind balks. The Fates aren’t something I grew up with or believed in. I’ve always thought we make our own destiny and life is what we make it to be.”
Sabin slanted him an amused look. “We can’t control life any more than time. Things happen that are completely out of our realm of control. Besides, control is an illusion after a certain point, anyway.”
“What do you mean?” Emmett asked, curious to hear Sabin’s theory.
“Well,” Sabin drawled, “look at us. We know shifters have destined mates. We don’t choose, yet there is, if we’re lucky, one person who is just ‘it’ for us. No one else will do after we meet our mate. That isn’t something we control, at all. You didn’t even know you were a shifter, and yet something, some force, brought you and I together and ripped away your veil of what you might call normal humanity to expose the truth of what lies inside you.”
“Jesus,” Emmett whispered, staring at Sabin. “You’ve decimated my argument.”
“We don’t even have control over our own bodies all of the time,” Sabin continued. “Or our minds. Look at fears we develop, or illnesses—though granted, for shifters those are very rare. But even a shifter can get shot or cut, break bones, die.
